Drinking and Driving

A new act has been made a law that places drunken drivers behind bars for life if they kill first responders. Some may say that this punishment is too severe, but I believe action should finally be taken. Not only should drunken drivers be placed in prison for life for killing people such as police officers, firemen, or paramedics, but they should also suffer these consequences for taking any other human being's life. No one deserves to die by a drunken driver and nobody should ever get behind the wheel if they are inebriated. This law is a good way to prevent others who do drink and drive from ever doing it again. Some may think that it may not ever happen to them, but life is just to short to test your limits.

Since 2002, nine Texas police officers have been struck and killed by drunken drivers. This statistic proves that drinking and driving is dangerous. If nine police officers were killed, the number of non first responders must be astonishing. I am greatful that this law has passed and I hope that this will reduce the amount of people who do drink and drive.

I completely support the new law that sentences drunken drivers to life in prison if they kill first responders. First responders, such as police officers and firemen, put their lives in danger in hope to protect our citizens. We pray they never have to pay the ultimate price due to drunk drivers when this could be prevented by people gaining some sense and responsibility. I also agree that drunk drivers should be put behind bars for life for killing not only first responders, but any innocent victim. All lives are precious and it's not fair that they have to be put at risk due to drunk driving. Running into someone with one's car when under the influence is just like murder. A vehicle and alcohol together is a weapon of destruction just like a gun and bullets.

As we all are aware of, many of injuries and deaths caused by drunk driving occurs everyday and over twenty percent of all traffic fatalities in the United State each year are caused by drunk drivers. I think this is serious problem not only in US society but all over the world. Government needs impose higher legal actions for drinking drivers to stop this situation. Some may think it’s too severe but people need to realize the seriousness of the problem and a fact that everybody is at risk too. I believe this law is a good way to prevent people from drinking driving and should be carried out.

I agree, stricter action should be taken to penalize those who make the choice to drink and drive. This new law is one step towards forcing people to think about their decisions. But even though it is a step forward, I think it is a somewhat bizarre step to take. Why did they choose first responders? Is it because they are forced to be out on the road amongst dangerous drivers while everyone else has the choice to stay home, away for those whose brains don’t work well enough to protect the heads they live in? If the 9 deaths mentioned were directly caused by respondents having special reason to be in contact with the inebriated driver, there might be cause to choose to protect just them. But are the chances really that much greater of hitting a police officer than hitting a regular citizen? Why don’t we choose the elderly, the handicapped, or people wearing orange shirts? The statistics might be the same. Do the officers have to be in uniform and on duty or could you be put away for killing an officer who just happened to be down on 6th street partying right next to you? I think people who drink and drive are ridiculous and I have had to take a cab home at my own expense because of them. What if that expense was to be hit by another drunk driver? Possibly even the friend who wouldn’t let me drive? What makes me, the artist/designer any different from the cop or firefighter? Like I said before though, it’s a start, now let’s see some action for the rest of us.

Nice solid post. Do you think the law will reduce drunk driving? Will it deter drunks?
